Is Love Science? by Leo Crocker Rogers After some 145 days, almost five months, of pure sunshine, it is raining in Mesa, Arizona today. So it is time to think of love as I walk Skipper (my dog) in the rain, through puddles, through small creeks along the curbs, and hearing the sucking sound as every plant, bush, and tree inhales the gift of God. Is love science? Some say yes. They say it is all about chemicals in the brain. The body just goes along for the ride. In the brain, there are two major chemicals that are active in love. Chemical One fosters the adrenaline rush, the physical sensations that involve attraction and the joys of sensory contact. The other, Chemical Two, relates to long term commitment. They are identifiably different. (Go to Eyesofnye.org for analysis and chemical names.) There are two types of people. Go to the mirror to see one of the two. One set seeks out fun (works on Chemical One) and hopes that a long term relationship evolves. The other type seeks out a relationship (works on Chemical Two) and hopes that fun will follow. It is all about chemicals. And what controls the production of these chemicals? Our brain. And what is our brain but a composition of molecules that are themselves chemicals. What are chemicals? A collection of atoms composed of electrons, protons, neutrons. And what are they? They are composed of Quarks which interestingly have the following names: Up (good); Down (sad); Top (straight up); Bottom (underhanded); Strange (mysterious); and Charm (self defined). (Even physicists know everything is all about qualities), and Leptons (adventurous things). There is even an "anti-strange" Quark. And what are they Quarks and Leptons? Energy packets. And what is energy? It is we expressed in countless layers and forms going about being stewards of the universe while loving one another in brotherly care. It is a mental world. It is beyond matter in any form, a brain, a body, molecules, atoms, Quarks, energy packets. The world is thought, from the holding of another’s hand while that person passes away, to the kissing away of tears of someone so dear to allow such intimacy. Life is like the universe, mental, and being mental it is indestructible. (You cannot kill a Lepton, an atom, a molecule, a chemical compound, a you or a me.) Do forms change? Yes. But ideas live forever. Can you remember your dad? I can. What does the remembering? Molecules, atoms, quarks. And what do my molecules, atoms, and quarks remember? My dad’s molecules, atoms and quarks? Absolutely not. What I remember is his industriousness, kindness, creativity, devotion, commitment, honesty, sacrifice, willingness. And too of my mother to which to add to my dad’s being, she wore hob-nailed boots. There may be two chemicals, Chemical One and Chemical Two that claim to push our love, romantic endeavors, but what really motivates us is who we are, the reflection of the infinite creation of Spirit. Everything is spiritual. Matter is energy only. There is no life in matter. Matter does not think. Come now, how can a combination of hydrogen or carbon atoms think or feel? We call mankind, "organic matter" as if a scientific name makes reality. Silly us. A name does not make us who we are, even a scientific name. We are spiritual beings, of the nature of qualities that last and last and last: our children, our parents, our friends, and even our pets. Eternity is ours right now because qualities are right now. Love is science. It is the science of the qualities of Spirit. It is raining in Mesa today, but not water. It is raining togetherness, the walk, the talk, the kissing away of tears.
